Eleanor Friedberger - Stare At The Sun

1 Eleanor Friedberger - Stare At The Sun

Album: "Personal Record"

Released: June 2013

Punchy pop! (There was a lot of that this year). Freidberger's solo work continues to step away from the shadow of the Fiery Furnaces.

Haim - The Wire

2 Haim - The Wire

Album: "Days Are Gone"

Released: Sept 2013

Good grief, this album was everywhere wasn't it? Also, #bassface <3 <3 <3

Jay Arner - Don't Remind Me

3 Jay Arner - Don't Remind Me

Album: "Jay Arner"

Released: June 2013

My favourite track of 2013. A big, fat pop song with a chorus that opens up wide which, of course, I'm forever a sucker for.

The Arcade Fire - Here Comes the Night Time

4 Arcade Fire - Here Comes the Night Time

Album: "Reflektor"

Released: Oct 2013

I'm not sure I'm the target audience for Arcade Fire albums anymore? With that said, regardless of what genres they backpack in to, it's impossible to deny that they're really great at putting out dramatic, urgent tracks.

Vampire Weekend - Diane Young

5 Vampire Weekend - Diane Young

Album: "Modern Vampires Of The City"

Released: May 2013

I got a lot of miles out of "Modern Vampires Of The City". Like, way more than I expected to.

Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder

6 Daft Punk - Giorgio by Moroder

Album: "Random Access Memories"

Released: May 2013

"Random Access Memories" was my favourite album of 2013. The sheer ambition and craftsmanship of it was outstanding. And the hype and build up before its release... wasn't that the best? Remember how nuts we all went for a 15 second teaser loop of "Get Lucky"?

Classixx - All You're Waiting For (feat. Nancy Whang)

7 Classixx - All You're Waiting For (feat. Nancy Whang)

Album: "Hanging Gardens"

Released: May 2013

I had really high hopes for a full length Classixx album based on how consistant the string of singles and remixes they did 3 - 4 years ago were. "Hanging Gardens" didn't work for me, but this track was the exception because it's absolutely perfect.

Jessie Ware - Running

8 Jessie Ware - Running

Album: "Devotion"

Released: April 2013

Gorgeous stuff. Jessie Ware is Sade for the iPhone generation.

Daughter - Human

9 Daughter - Human

Album: "If You Leave"

Released: March 2013

Weirdly, I stumbled into Daughter's stuff through a random soundcloud remix and only then found "If You Leave". They're really good at balancing gentle vocals with big instrument sounds. That's usually pretty hard to do.

The Courtneys - 90210

10 The Courtneys - 90210

Album: "90210"

Released: June 2013

Vancouver represent! This one gone heavy rotation on hot, sweaty summer days. Possibly my second favourite song of 2013.

Tegan & Sara - Closer

11 Tegan & Sara - Closer

Album: "Heartthrob"

Released: Jan 2013

I couldn't wrap my head around "Closer" until I heard it in context with the rest of "Heartthrob". The twins have made the leap into full on pop music... leap with them and it becomes pretty great.

AlunaGeorge - Your Drums, Your Love

12 AlunaGeorge - Your Drums, Your Love

Album: "Body Music"

Released: June 2013

AlunaGeorge can do no wrong, guys.

Ciara - Overdose

13 Ciara - Overdose

Album: "Ciara"

Released: July 2013

While everyone else was consumed with "Body Party", this one was my Ciara jam.

Elvis Costello & The Roots - Walk Us Uptown

14 Elvis Costello & The Roots - Walk Us Uptown

Album: "Wise Up Ghost"

Released: Sept 2013

Did you read Questlove's biography when it came out earlier this year? I did. It was great... and spawned a phase where I endlessly listened to everything he was putting out.

Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Day

15 Kurt Vile - Wakin On A Pretty Day

Album: "Wakin On A Pretty Daze"

Released: April 2013

Seriously mellow gold.

Atoms For Peace - Before Your Very Eyes...

16 Atoms For Peace - Before Your Very Eyes...

Album: "Amok"

Released: Feb 2013

Every fall when the snow arrives, temperatures plunge, and the sun sets early I gravitate to a darker, more nihilistic band or album. "Amok" did it for me this year.

Disclosure - When A Fire Stats To Burn

17 Disclosure - When A Fire Stats To Burn

Album: "Settle"

Released: March 2012

When ever I talk about Disclosure I can't help but bring up the fact that these dudes are all of 20 years old. How do young dudes have such a mastery of electronic music? They're an encyclopedia of 90's-era garage and house put through all the filters in Ableton.

Duke Dumont - Need U (100%)

18 Duke Dumont - Need U (100%) feat. A*M*E

Album: "Need U (100%) - Single"

Released: Oct 2012

This was my summer jam. Forget "Blurred Lines" or whatever. This is three and a half minutes of pure bliss.

Jody Glenham - Between You and Me

19 Jody Glenham - Between You and Me

Album: "Dreamer 7""

Released: Nov 2013

Pleasure Cruise's leading lady goes solo. If Pleasure Cruise is the soundtrack for getting day drunk on a hot summer Saturday afternoon, then the Dreamer 7" is the soundtrack for a sobering Sunday morning hangover. (In a good way)

Phosphorescent - Song for Zula

20 Phosphorescent - Song for Zula

Album: "Muchacho"

Released: March 2013

Is Americana still a thing? Is this Americana? Either way, it's beautiful.
